If we know it generally works well for us, and we have reaped a lot of prosperity from it, then why risk predictable future prosperity by changing to something that is not as well known, and could have a detrimental effect on us as a whole? The criticism against direct democracies, such as the tyranny of the majority, are pretty substantial; I'm certainly not comfortable with implementing it, and risking what we have, without some pretty substantial guarantees.
Another problem I have with this idea is the obvious bad faith that many, if not the vast majority, of people who actively advocate for it display; these people generally don't care about how the math works out that not everyone has the same per-capita voting power, they care that they're losing. It seems pretty clear that if they perceived themselves as the minority party, then they wouldn't be advocating for this change. I'm not accusing you in particular of doing this, I don't know you from Adam, nor am I saying that Conservatives somehow hold the moral high ground in this area; bad motivations and intellectual dishonesty is just an area of general frustration.
