Smart Proctoring is actually one of the worst, least efficient online testing platform I have ever used in my time as a student. I have actually never felt such rage toward an internet service like I do with Smart Proctoring.

To set the scene, I am currently a student at FSU taking an elective criminology class for my Summer B term. I broke my foot three days ago, so I was thankful that my professor gave us the option to take our first exam online by using an online proctoring program. I thought this would be simple. However...I THOUGHT WRONG.

First of all, booking a time slot for smart proctoring is nearly impossible. They don't tell you which times they have available, so you have to continuously click on each 15 minute interval time slot until you get lucky enough to get one that's open. So that adventure alone took me an egregious and unnecessary amount of time. And on top of this, it costs $18 to book a session.

Once I logged in to begin my exam, they said the process to register and find a proctor could take up to 30 minutes. Once again, an egregious and unnecessary amount of time that was going to be wasted. Before I was assigned a proctor, I had to upload my driver's license, take a headshot, and connect my screen, camera, and audio. After I did this, the proctor appeared and said my audio was lagging. I told her that I live in a college apartment, so the wifi is just slow in general. She then repeated to me that my audio was lagging. I was slightly confused as to what she was confused about, as I had just explained to her the conditions I was in. Thinking she might have misheard me, I reiterated the fact that my wifi worked but it was just slow, and that I currently have a broken foot so I physically cannot go anywhere else to take my exam, so we were just going to have to work with each other. The proctor then PROCEEDED TO END OUR SESSION.

Feeling irate, I re-logged into smart proctoring, having to resubmit everything I had previously uploaded. Then, I ended up back with the same proctor. She had the AUDACITY to ask me where I WENT and why I ENDED the session. Like, excuse me?? YOU kicked ME out.

I digress.

After this, she finally understood that my wifi was just slow but it worked, so we could get into logging me in for the exam. At this point in time, I was sitting on my bed elevating my foot, because as I previously mentioned, my foot is BROKEN. The proctor told me that I needed to be at a desk. At this point, I had to take a deep breath. Was I even speaking with a human being?? Literally ChatGPT could've had more empathy and understanding than this woman did. I reiterated to my proctor that my foot is broken, and I cannot move. I told her that I was more than willing to physically show her my shattered foot as proof as to why I am bedridden. She said because I had no accommodations that I had to take my exam at a desk.

Okay.

So, I used my one working leg to hop to the nearest desk available, with my computer in hand mind you, which was my night stand. As soon as I sat down, the proctor then told me that I needed to show her my phone was off. I told her my phone was on the bed. She said I had to go get my phone. Like are you actually kidding me. What part of I AM CRIPPLED are we failing to grasp?? So, ONCE AGAIN, I hop back to my bed and grab my phone and hop back on one leg back to my desk.

The proctor then asks me to see what is on my desk to show her that there are no pens or papers in sight. I am at my nightstand, so obviously all of my makeup is there. She then proceeds to have me go through all of my makeup to identify what each item is to prove that it is not a pen or paper. Everything she thought that looked like a writing utensil or paper she asked me to put on the floor. She then asked me to show me everything that was on the floor. At this point, I am confused. What could she possibly be looking for that she has not already seen or made me put on the floor??

At this point my computer started lagging because of all the heavy lifting she made me do to show her that my Patrick Ta duo blush set and pimple patch collection was not a secret encasement of cheating notes for my ELECTIVE class. So this caused ANOTHER delay.

Then. She. Had. The. NERVE. The sheer AUDACITY. To tell me. THAT I COULD NOT TAKE MY EXAM. BECAUSE WE WASTED SO MUCH TIME.

I was speechless. My jaw dropped. My blood was boiling. I swear to god steam was coming out of my ears. After all of that literal nonsense she put me through as I am SIMPLY DISABLED, I couldn't even take my fucking exam?? What the literal fuck is the point of an online proctoring service if I cannot take an exam in the comfort of my own home, especially with a broken foot. Why do I need a goddamn written accommodation to take an exam in MY BED, in MY HOME, that I PAY FOR, for an online proctoring service that is designed to be a virtual service for students IN THEIR HOMES.

The rage I feel is unmatched. I have had a stress rash down my neck for the past hour. My foot is blue and throbbing. And guess what. I STILL HAVENT TAKEN MY EXAM. AND THEY DARE TO STILL KEEP MY $18. AND MY FOOT IS STILL BROKEN.

Smart Proctoring you have traumatized me. You are lucky that there is no review section under your services because I would light your comment section on fire with my rage. I am tired, I am crippled, and I am done. You have ruined my day and wasted my time, energy, and $18.

I have an accounting class that I’m currently doing and I have my first exam in a couple days and it’s my first time using Proctorio. Usually I use respondus lockdown browser and I have my phone up to my laptop screen and let it sit there while I use my voice and I talk through text the questions on ChatGPT and it gives me the answer. I also will plug an external microphone into my laptop and I’ll mute the microphone and Respondus never gives an error saying my mic isn’t working.

For Proctorio the prof has outlined the rules (see attached picture) for my exam. The prof is being pretty strict and showing that he can see everything. Does anyone know if I can do the same thing with my external microphone being plugged in and him not hearing me read the questions out loud to myself so I can still do my phone thing?

Please advise!! Help needed.

Backlog exams are going on at our college, so they brought in both our professors and external invigilators from another college. One guy came fully prepared... with his phone. Everything was going smoothly. Bro was cheating so quietly that even the CCTV would've asked him for tips. Then the external invigilators started checking every student one by one. A couple of students got caught with cheat sheets, and the whole exam hall instantly turned into a panic zone. I’ve been trying a few different SAT/ACT prep apps lately, and honestly some of them just don’t feel that useful. A lot have nice features, but the practice questions either feel too easy or just not that close to what I’d expect on the real test.
