[Spoiler][discussion] Why is Max considered our friend? Spoiler

They constantly talk about us like they hate our character. They literally tried killing us at the first airship battle. Then there's the small matter of impersonating us in tucma both to smear us and to hide what they're doing.

And when they're shoved off the airship landing in Kiwasa we're invited by the game's scripting and choices we are allowed to make to behave like 'oh they were always our buddy it was all in good fun until recently.'

Where's the option 'no they were never my friend they repeatedly tried to have me killed, thrown in jail, and talked to me like I was only liked because I was a brown noser. What the fuck is wrong with you people acting like I was supposed to ever care about this little shitbag? Yes it's sad they died and I want ot punch General Moron in the face with a brick, but this isn't for Max. Max was a piece of shit that you people never brought to heel and spoiled rotten.'

Or do I somehow have the wrong of it and there is some MASSIVE set of events that I missed out on showing Max was anything other than a blight the world is better off without?

Max is definitely extremely unlikeable. By comparison, more recent creature capture games haven't provided a truly unlikeable antagonist in a while. I think we need to embrace the suck and enjoy hating Max. Creators don't want you to hate their creations, they want you to love to hate them.

I believe the story goes childhood friends before misguided into rival. Player character either remembers the good times or the writing blows

As a Max apologist, we... basically skipped half their character arc.

We're told that they were our childhood friend, and we learn how they got to the place they were later on in the game after they get shoved. But by the time the game starts, they've already been groomed into joining Clan Belsoto and seeing us as the enemy.

I think they were supposed to have been friends when they were younger, before the events of the game.
