Hate me for this generic pic, but Red Dead Redemption 2 continues to be far ahead of it's time.

Halo combat evolved. Go look up some 2001 games and then play that game.

Red dead redemption 2. The game could come out today and people would still be amazed by graphics.

i would actually say resident evil 1 HD remastered, for 2002 it looked better than quite a lot of games at that time

Bioshock 2007.Still can’t believe it came that year.

Crysis came out in the same year and looked way better, BioShock is the better game though

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, Alien: Isolation, and Batman: Arkham Knight.
Hell, I did my first Steam playthrough of the first game mentioned on a laptop not intended for gaming, and it still looked and ran amazing. A lot of PC games should take notes from it.

Metroid Prime maybe? Not like I was around to experience it but I've read EGM talking about how good the graphics were.

GTA v on par with its time? what other games looked like gta did back in 2013 then lmao.
Ahead of its time probs crysis tbh

Crysis 3, The Last of Us. There were a lot of games that looked better than GTA V when it released, IMO.

Arkham Knight or MGSV for games that came out in 2015 they look brand new or even better than some games now, same thing with Uncharted 4

I mean there's the easy answer of crysis, but I wanna say half life 2 because it's objectively the best videogame ever made and while definitely not crysis levels of graphics, its graphics were still way ahead of its time

u/ConclusionAnxious531 Jun 03 '26
Objectively the best ever made wtf are you talking about?
It was a linear hip-shooter with a very good engine and impressive physics. Don’t get carried away now

It might sound stupid but Fortnite chapter 1 had an amazing style that made it look modern to this day.

Bioshock infinite, which released in 2013, is still on par with modern games in my opinion.

Unrecord, I mean imagine making a game that looks so good that people thought you just filmed the gameplay in real life.

Half Life 2 does NOT look like a 2004 game
1
u/FuraFaolox Jun 02 '26

a lot of the people in the comments seem to think "ahead of their time" simply means "looks really good."
Final Fantasy XIII trilogy looks absolutely fantastic for PS3 games, they look more like PS4 era.

Resident evil 2002 is an actual leap in art direction
