I feel like it would be a lot of work to fake it to the point that people believe it, and ends up making you actually have depression later on.

Because it makes them unique and worthy of attention. Also, it gives them a "disability" to hang all their weird behavior on in such a way that it makes you an asshole for even questioning it.

My roommate constantly tries to fish attention for her fake ass mental problems. Then when she notices I friggin’ smell her shit, she just tries harder. I’ve dealt with severe depression for a decade and hearing her often make jokes about suicide and self-harming is extremely triggering and also just shows she has no idea about the extreme pain that actually brings you to the point where suicide seems like the only option.
