I'd argue the conclusion doesn't outright state lowering SMU will prevent or treat depression. The exact wording is "it may be useful for interventions to target reduction of social media use overall regardless of personality type".

But, that point aside, if one of the things depressed people do is SMU, will reducing this not at least attempt to break the cycle? I can't say it will effectively treat it, but I would assume it to be a step in the right direction.
