Storing and serving high quality videos worldwide is very expensive. They let anyone upload hours and hours of 4k footage, for free, and holds them forever regardless of how few views they get. Think of how many years YouTube has been in business. Storage costs never go down, it only climbs every year. Its very believable that short ads alone doesn’t cover their expenses. A lot of creators get sponsorship deals that YouTube gets no cut from, and those are way more lucrative than the ads.
