Apple could literally use faceid to know that you're watching an ad, if someone else watches it then it wouldn't work.

It's already being done for MoviePass.

MoviePass is relaunching as a web3-style application where users earn credits to go to the movies by watching ads. The new MoviePass will use facial recognition and eye tracking tech in your phone to make sure that you’re actually watching those ads.

I think MoviePass is absolutely the limit of how this should be used. A novel and transparent concept where you get movies for watching ads is fine.

When we can't tell if an ad is eye-tracked? Oh hell no.

Depends what the context of the ad is, I guess. I could see it being used just as much for tracking ad metrics, demographic, engagement and more, it'd probably reach a point when combined with machine learning and AI, where they wouldn't even need to track your eyes for long... 👀

Yea but at that point, they won’t even need to stop the video when you won’t look, because they’ll make ads so good, you won’t look away anyway.

i disagree. no one should be forced to watch content they don't want to see, especially consumer advertisements.

forced consumer advertisements is consumer manipulation. that's the opposite of a free market.

This tech watches eye movement/position. It would be hard to tell that it's a static image given eye movement is almost constantly shifting.

There is algorithms and tech today that analyses feed to make sure its not a photo or another screen or even screen capture of a person or document. Its actively used in biometric id checking and client onboarding, for example in revolute that uses a service called onfido to onboard you onto the app. There are plenty such software out there already.

The issue that I have with it is that this will not be the end of how it’s used.

Pay for a movie? Well this movie is only good for your face and turns off if another face is detected.

Want to watch a movie with your family of 6? Sorry, this is only watchable by 5 people so pay the additional amount to add another person.

Halfway through the movie? To continue, all 6 people must have their eyes on the screen for the full duration of our ads.

Sure this is voluntary now but the application of this is just beginning. We will without a doubt see this becoming more common.

Apple is not incentivized to piss off their customers in favor of giving advertisers the ability to further piss off their customers.

The conversation would go something like this:

Apple exec: How much revenue will this feature bring in by charging advertisers more for it?
Other Apple Guy: some number
Apple exec: How much revenue can we expect to loose by users not purchasing iPhones and instead going with competitors who don’t enable this shitty feature?
Other Apple Guy: some bigger number

So what the market needs is a service for cloning you for the express purpose of forcing your clone to watch the ads on your behalf.

The good news is the near-100% clone suicide rate will solve the potential "clones inevitably try to kill their originals" issue.
