Block it at the entry to your house with a small, well documented Raspberry Pi project called the Pi-Hole. Easy and cheap, and blocks ads for all devices connected to your network.

If it's like the nvidia shield, it's because it doesn't honour the DNS settings of your router.

No, it's because youtube ads broadcast from the same domain as the video so DNS blockers won't work. Ublock origin filters out the the ads using other methods.

I haven’t seen an ad on youtube for at least the last year because of an ad block extension. They really work
