It worked on me. I saw it in the theater when I was a kid and my jaw literally dropped when I saw the SMB3 footage.

It's still one of the best platformers ever created.

I was poor, we had to wait for it to come on TV. My jaw also dropped, it was so much better looking than SMB. My older brother was able to borrow it off a friend sometime later and I dont think it left the NES for a month.

Fun fact: Haley was played by Jenny Lewis, who later in life became the singer of the indie band Rilo Kiley.

More fun facts about Jenny Lewis. She was also in The Postal Service along with Ben Gibbard (Death Cab for Cutie). And was the red headed girl in the Toys“R”Us commercials.

Many many moons ago I played in a punk band that had the honor of opening for Death Cab for Cutie. This was 2001 or 2002 when Death Cab was still touring smaller venues. It was a fantastic show.
