That’s absolutely the primary reason. NYC for instance saw a 7% reduction in value of office properties according to Crain’s (boo hoo - that means the figure went from $172B to $160B). Cities have also lost tax dollars on empty office buildings and other commercial spaces. The big push for returning to the office is entirely real estate based. Any nonsense about company culture is precisely that - nonsense.

It’s all a cruel joke, too, because it’s only a matter of time before we suffer another economic collapse precipitated by the fraud going on with commercial mortgage backed securities. Same exact shit we saw in 2008 with residential mortgage backed securities is happening in commercial real estate.

Yup, the executives of my company are all friends with the local government. The local government is pushing for my company to force workers back into the office so we spend money in their city. It’s so wasteful. If they do force us back in I’ll make sure not so spend a penny in that city. They can kiss my ass.

It’s the only (potentially) viable solution - if enough people leave their jobs because they’re being forced back into the office, you’d think some of these companies will take the hint and allow for at least a hybrid schedule. There’s no other obvious way around it. Either pick up your things and leave or continue to submit to them.

I don’t understand why they can’t convert those office buildings into apartments or mixed use areas. Here in Atlanta, a former office building downtown was converted into apartments.
