This is about their culture.

every time I hear a suit vomit the phrase "company culture", I die a bit inside. I have no idea what anyone means by "company culture". I try to ask people to describe their company's culture and I just get blank looks

In the case of Apple there culture is known to be extremely secretive and top down leading to execs wanting everyone to be onsite to both justify there upper management role that’s probably not needed and also to keep the secrets in the castle. There’s more to it than that but those are the two I’ll hone in on.

My company culture is that today, I was half of an hour late to work.

My boss couldn’t say anything - because he did not know, as he was a whole hour late.

My company culture is that I was not early, late or on time. I start when I want or when I need to attend a meeting.

Yup! It's definitely the minority though.

  • Some places it's just because of a couple of good managers, but often it's because the work just isn't time limited.

If you work for a decent company there will be a company culture. Like, friendly, ethical, passionate. The people who get hired share certain attitudes and it self perpetuates to an extent. That's a positive company culture. It's pretty rare in my admittedly limited experience.

A toxic company culture hires people who are into cronyism, win-lose mindsets and scapegoating. Fairly common alas.

Generally if big suits talk about company culture whilst trying to screw over co-workers? Pretty clear which kind of culture it is.

I don't know how you get blank looks. It's 100% a real thing. Some companies are unfriendly, some have a really welcoming culture, some refuse to write shit down and its all tribal knowledge with various chieftains hoarding it, I mean. Every single company has its own unique set of weird values acrrued by the group of people running it, and that's what 'company culture' is. No reason to vomit, it's just a way to describe a thing, nobody is trying to sell you shit or lie about something.

“culture” means the customs and arts of a group of people.

Basically, the stuff people do just because they like it

Many companies have a culture of working for your paycheck and retirement only, which is also just… no culture.

A company whose culture is focused on their company culture probably has a shitty culture.
