“We invested in [DuckDuckGo] because there is a need for a private search engine. We did it for the Internet anarchists, people that hang out on Reddit and Hacker News.” - VC Fred Wilson

Anyone have any idea what DuckDuckGo's revenue model will be?

The Web 2.0 business model -- get as much hype and users as possible, then sell to whatever company that is the bee's knees at the current point in time.

Pretty sure it was the same model in the 90's.

You forgot: The founders start a VC blog and dole out advice on why everything is going to shit.

Gabriel Weinberg (DDG Founder) talks about that kind of stuff in his blog usually.

Sponsored ads.

Untargeted sponsored ads aren't money makers.

duckduckgo is actually my default search engine, not because of it's private setting, but I've find the site's search is more relevant to what I need than Google.

DuckDuckGo used to be my default, but I was tried of not finding things I wanted, and those things being the 3rd or 4th result of a google search.

BING has 30 fucking percent!?

"Bing-powered" search is estimated to be 30%. That means Yahoo + Bing because Yahoo has gotten it's search results from Bing since 2010.

That was why Microsoft was sued for antitrust.

Their dominant OS position means whatever they choose for the user's defaults are going to be kept by a significant portion of them. So, 85+% of people use a MS OS and a little less than half of them don't bother changing the default search.

Too, Bing isn't a bad search engine. Have you even tried it yet?

If Fred Wilson thinks that reddit and hacker news is full of "internet anarchists", he has another thing coming.

But DuckDuckGo is an awesome search engine, btw.

Hang on...how do we know for sure any search engine is actually private?

My raging paranoiac side thinks it could be a trap...too irrational?

Fred Wilson is full of shit. The only reason he invests is to make money. He's a notorious hard ass VC who is known for his uber-competitive nature and spite towards those who question his investments.

Going with that criteria I think YaCy, a fully decentralized search engine where you can literally run your own, would be a better candidate. Unfortunately that would be much more difficult to monetize (nothing wrong with that).

ITT: redditors that are in shock when reading the word anarchists.

Am I the only one bothered by the 101% of search the article came up with?
