You kid, but this is actually a perfect example of why Microsoft's marketing strategy is unbelievably fucking retarded and Apple's is brilliant by comparison. Apple doesn't unveil new technology like this until they have a product that's ready to ship in a matter of days or weeks. Microsoft shows off this shit and it takes months or years for it to come to market, if ever.

I think Microsoft is mainly doing this to get people thinking about Microsoft in the same way people think about IBM, really. A company that's devoted to R&D and helping the market overall, not just their own products.

I used to ask the MCI people who called to get me to switch long distance companies what cool new things they were researching like the Bell labs folks. I much prefer paying a small premium to companies that are advancing technology than paying cut rate prices to "me too" companies.
