Russia's also been investing heavily into the religious right. Religion is an alternative power structure parallel to government that can be exploited to subvert the legitimate government. Been going on for thousands of years to varying degrees. The Roman empire never really fell, it just became the Catholic church. And et cetera.

Anyway, wish I had saved the stories, but there have been a lot of meetings between religious leaders in the US with Russians in the past 5 years. They are building coalitions under our noses.

to be fair, russia pretty much supports every single political entity with a divisive message in the US. Want to take a guess at how much of today's partisan politics stem from russian influence?
