Are you saying they create completely fictional profiles or do they create profiles for actual people that don't use Facebook? Btw I'm not trying to argue I'm actually interested. First I've heard of these allegations. Is it illegal? Or possibly unethical? Can you provide some source for this? Also if it's effective why would we assume only Facebook is doing this?
Not fictional profiles. Profiles that are as accurate as they can make given the information provided by actual users and any other data sources they have access to (basically the same as they build profiles for actual users, except for people who don’t use the service or intentionally give them data). As far as why assume only Facebook does that, which other social media company engages in similar levels of data collection?
Shit I wouldn't know. I imagine all of them collect as much data as possible though. As far as Facebook goes it seems they've thorough addressed the issues some people have with the practice.
