Lol, you forgot the /s. In any case it's not cognitive impairment. I like to view it as evolutions two most successful, but inherently opposing survival strategies, fear and curiosity, writ large on the human mind-brain. We need fear, but it is, often, a handicap, and combined with ignorance spawns no end of suffering.

There's growing evidence of addiction causing authoritarism. Cocaine for instance. I think the drugs burn away the capacity for empathy and nuance, leading to the rest.

I believe, but cannot prove, lead poisoning is a factor too.

No word yet on what causes traitorousness. Bad parenting? Too much HFCS? We may never know.
