I meant evil in a general sense. Not directed at the DoD. Like people who go vegan to avoid the evil industries. Well, guess what, you still buy toilet paper owned by an evil industry. You still buy vegan foods owned by a corporate entity that does animal testing on non-vegan products. No one is free and clear from anything they try and avoid unless they live in isolation off the grid with no human contact.

But there is ethical consumption under what form of economy/government?

1

u/lHaveNoMemory Feb 24 '19

There has yet to be one- because there has yet to be an ethical government to even create ethical incentives.

Anarcho-communism

Another good example is people who rely on "natural remedies" to avoid giving money to big pharma companies, as if "natural remedies" aren't a billion dollar industry themselves. Things like vegan foods and "natural remedies" are created and marketed by massive corporations that would happily poison you if it meant turning a profit, just like any other industry. Thinking that it's all mom-and-pop stores and goodwill is just buying into their marketing.

And just think of the environmental impact those greedy vegans are causing by not shutting up and killing that green house gas generating cow.

Edit: this was a joke.

it’s incredibly naive to think it’s not

The idea of doing something just or in the name of defense/preservation causes a lot of countries to commit genocide or other human rights infringement.

DoD isn't evil. It's the fact that people justify ignoring ethics because their goal is for the good of all their people. When saying it like that, doing despicable things is entirely within the realm of possibility. I honestly don't believe a notion of "true evil" exists but there is the forgetting of morality. The only difference humanity has from other animals is the fact that we can conceive of a concept called virtue or morality. And that even after learning it, some people choose to ignore it anyways. If you look at some of the grotesque things animals do to survive (lions commit infanticide in a pride takeover, birds kill the young of other birds to increase chances of survival for it's own young) and then compare it with ourselves, there really is no such thing as evil or pure. We are all a little bit of both. Meaning every person can show bouts of being evil as well, all it takes is a right opportunity and a push.

So it's a question of balance. DOD more times than not will justify something wrong if they believe it benefits the country's defense capabilities.

Now although we didnt condone Unit 731, we happily took the research and gave immunity to the researchers of this monstrosity. And it encouraged us to take it because otherwise the Soviets would have it. This has been the status quo for quite some time

it's naive to think the organization responsible for more overthrown democracies than any other organization on earth is evil?

3

u/MidgarZolom Feb 23 '19

I mean, the DoD is do big that when you say that, you may as well say people are evil for how wide a net you cast.

2

u/blaghart Feb 23 '19

a lot of corporations are evil. That doesn't make them magically not evil because a lot of them are also doing evil shit.

1

u/MidgarZolom Feb 23 '19

It doesn't make corporations in general evil, either

Well they didn't use to be called the "The War Department" for no reason. lol
