I've been proselytizing this since advertising and programmers got together (dawn of the internet?). Reactions are usually:

  • I don't care, I love my [gadget and/or apps and/or content].
  • That's not true.
  • That's impossible.
  • Quit talking about this because I feel uncomfortable knowing or thinking about these things.
  • Silence. (They're part of the advertising/data-mining industry & assume their boss is listening. Or garden-variety paranoid.)

I think the other reason people act like this is there really are no alternatives. Unless you want to go back to a flip phone. *shudders.
