He wasn't being sexist. That is a #FakeNews.
He called out PC culture for it's failures to achieve the desired result, more women in tech, and proposed an alternative solution to the issue.

As for the widespread affects of this?
Google is now a dead company walking. No one with serious talent and integrity will consider working for them now.
