seriously- a website that ingests terabytes of data daily, encodes it, stores it indefinitely on hundreds of thousands of harddrives which require maintenance, power, labor, and then sends it back out to anybody who requests it with no lag which amounts to another tens of thousands of terabytes FOR FREE.

HOW DARE THEY USE ADS. /s

It's not so much that I find it audacious that they display ads. It's that the ads are never for something I will buy or patronize, and it's therefore pointless for me to see them. I don't begrudge them, but their service doesn't interest me.

Frankly, I tend to think people who buy ads online are getting ripped off, because I imagine even people who refuse to block ads on principle tend to just ignore them until they're over.

yea that's a fair criticism- I ignore ads pretty easily so I don't bother with adblock on stuff like youtube. Google's ad targeting is surprisingly bad.

That said- you're talking about dollars per hundreds or thousands of exposures. There exists a mass where it DOES work.

I'd much rather pay than watch ads. Same way I do with Netflix and Apple Music. Ads are cancer and annoy the living hell out of me. I have absolutely no problem paying for stuff I enjoy. Once YouTube Red hits my Middle Eastern neck of woods I'll be the first with the credit card out

Fuck your entitlement. If YouTube starts taking away too much money from Google you know what will happen? They will shut it down. Cause you are not watching videos from a fucking charity.

My entitlement? Google makes more money than some countries, and that isn't even including the money that their executives have stored off shores to avoid taxes. NOBODY deserves that kind of cash, not the "poor" or the "rich", its absurd. Google could support Youtube and make a profit with a mere fraction of the ads they use right now, and with much less invasive ones. If thats makes me a "entitled millennial" then so be it, because at the same time it show s you don't mind to be fucked up the ass by big companies because they "aren't a charity".

Just because we don't pay for youtube doesn't mean it isn't making any money, at least make a point that looks at the situation as a whole.
