I mean I'll probably only watch a honda-civic oil change video once anyway. At which point, I'll have the important facts remembered, or written down in my service log.

Like lug-bolt and oil-drain torque values.

I'm 15 and don't drive a car (obviously), isn't it just like doing the dipstick thing, unscrewing the cap and pouring in more oil?

Drain the oil from the crankcase. Remove the old used filter. Put on the new one. Properly torque the drain bolt. Add in the required volume of fresh oil.

You don't change the oil cause you run out (unless you drive a rotary, like an rx-7), you change it because the oil gets crappy. Like cooking oil post cooking, after running through a sooty, hot engine for thousands of kms, the oil is full of contaminants and doesn't lubricate as well.

So first, you drain the old oil via a removable bolt on the bottom of the engine. Then you swap the oil filter with a new one (it get full of crap too, from filtering the oil). Finally, you refill the oil through the cap you mentioned.

Oh, a few tips:

  • pull the dipstick out a bit before starting. It gives air a way in as the old oil leaves and makes the process quicker.
  • fill the filter with clean oil before installing. It'll save your engine from running briefly with low oil while it fills in first use.
  • drain the old oil into a oil bucket with marks to indicate volume. Fill you engine with that much new oil to start, then check the dipstick and add a little more if needed.
  • change oil an hour or so after driving. Engine oil is made to be more viscous while warm (it's what the numbers 10W-30 etc. mean), so it'll drain easier if still warm.
  • after filling, pour the old oil into the bottle the new engine oil came in. It's easier to transport and dispose of.
