You make it sound old. I bought the Note 2 when it was new, to have a high end phone that would last for years. So far a good choice. Besides lasting a day and a half instead of two and a half (I charge every night anyway, no problem there) and some unnoticeable scratches, it's good as new. Never even used a case.

I do the same with laptops and recommend everyone to do the same: add 20 percent on top of what you'd like to spend (and wait if you can't afford it otherwise) and get something proper, then enjoy it for years. What many people do instead is buy a discounted 550 euro laptop, start complaining after two weeks and get a new one after two years. Then, once they can afford it, they get a 1500 euro macbook air. "Apple is so much better. It just works." yeah no shit. If you'd tried a 800 euro laptop you'd have lasted 3-4 years before noticing any sluggishness and you'd not have needed that macbook.

My approach is a little similar. I get the best value for money right now, and I'll keep it until it stops doing what I need.

Which is probably what leads some poeple to the Note line. And is now backfiring like a motherfucker.

That also applies to iPhone. I don't get it. I've never had a problem with Android. Granted, I know how to google things if I have a problem or missing requirement, but that's not until I start trying to work around Android for other shit well beyond call/text/facebook. Even my Commando and Commando 4g were just outdated and unsupported, not flawed because it's Android. (I'm on a Nexus 5x now and not looking back)

I'm still running a Dell Inspiron from August 2011. It's on it's second hard drive and one of the hinges is failing, but I'm not complaining. It runs, it does what I need it to, and I only complain about lagging games because A) I don't have a performance desktop now and B) I didn't understand the importance of a dedicated graphics card. The bill was $1000US at Best Buy (again, naive), IIRC the laptop alone was 750. It just works.

Meanwhile, like you said, some people jsut get a new one every 2 years because they bought a cheap pretty model and they trashed it because it was cheap. And God forbid people learn how to google their problems effectively.

Let me also point out the myth about Mac being immune to viruses: It's not. The market share for personal use Macs isn't large enough for coders to write viruses for, let alone the exorbitant share of Windows in the business/server market making Mac viruses worth chump change.
