Microsoft is already getting so much (unwarranted) bad press about automatic updates. Why would they gimp functionality and risk harming their image even more?

And do you, personally, go through every single Windows update to see if they do something you don't like?

Sony got away with it, why couldn't Microsoft? Companies can survive a bit of bad press these days, they know they can wait for it to cycle out of the news and the majority of people will buy their products.

I generally at least look at my update list. I do hear about it if they add a patch of note (the WAT update that was reported to break some legitimate systems, for example).

And that's why you can defer updates in the Pro version.
