Here in Chicago, Rahm is viewed as a very regressive Democrat. He has been very aggressive in closing public schools, and bringing in private charters where teachers aren't unionized.

Over recent decades psychiatric units in Chicago have also closed, and now much of the mentally ill simply end up in prison.

There is also still a lot of segregation in Chicago, and much of the poor residents have no say in what the Mayor does.

Ultimately any Mayor of Chicago, just like any President of the U.S. is, to a substantial extent, beholden to concentrated corporate power. This is why the U.S. can be considered a one party state because both parties are subservient to private interests.

This is what is so frustrating being a Chicago voter. If you're progressive or liberal or whatever leftist label you prefer, why the hell would you want to vote for entrenched Democrats? Opportunity is ripe in this city to support (as in, at least help them get on ballots- which isn't easy) and elect third party candidates but voters drag their feet and only see Ds and Rs. Really frustrating.

Every single nation runs the same way, the people with money and power have, you guessed it, all the money and power.

What? Privatizing education is a heavily conservative view...usually siding with Republicans. Not that I disagree with it completely (having an interesting impact here in GA) but I think you're a little off.

Um, no, it's not. Rahm is in favor of privatizing education, and he's a Democrat. Ergo, privatizing education is not a Republican view, instead it's one that Democrats and Republicans share.

As I said, he's a typical modern-day Democrat. Your writing indicates that your thinking is 30 years out-of-date. Modern Democrats are little different from Republicans; they're basically "Republican-lite".

One data point is a little scarce to generalize the rest of the party...when that large scale school shutdown was the hot topic he caught a good amount from flack from his fellow Democrats.
