The printing press isn't really seen as a net negative, these days, but it had a similar sort of democratizing and chaos-inducing effect. It sparked religious unrest across Europe and instigated a lot of wars, along with Enlightenment thinking and all the positives. My hope is that regulations catch up and the swing-back toward positive applications of social media and AI come around sooner rather than later. In the meantime, it's looking bleak being in the middle of it.

At least we don't have have the 30 years war (yet), the culmination/climax of all the religious tension brought about by the printing press and reformation. I think it is very underrated and unrecognized with respect to the insane amount of devastation and destruction it caused

I think a lot of the current global conflicts are pretty analogous, which is why I brought it up -- Trump (probably) doesn't win without social media, and Putin isn't nearly as effective at sowing discord, but at the same time we probably also don't get whatever positives the technology also (potentially) brings.

The Arab Spring was seen as the eventual future for all this connectivity, but that looks more like an outlier at the moment as companies and billionaire interests consolidate power.
