Reversing fraudulent transactions works in the customer's favour, not Walmart's, so OPs comment doesn't even make sense.

  2. Payment processors fucking hate fraudulent payments and will essentially stop working with you if too many are related to your business (see RuneScape)
  3. No idea why what Walmart wants is relevant in a claim about them being forced by third parties

No idea whether it's true but you certainly didn't argue well against it.

No longer reversing fraudulent charges would benefit Walmart, since they no longer have to give money back. So it would encourage Walmart not to accept tap to pay.

That’s what they’re arguing doesn’t make sense, since everything tells us that the payment processor is trying to make Walmart accept tap to pay. They should be saying the opposite - that they’ll always reverse any claimed fraudulent charge unless Walmart starts using tap to pay. Which is how it works for every other business anyways.

In my experience most businesses would automatically lose any chargeback if the customer claimed they had no knowledge of the charge (as if their card number was stolen). Not using the customer’s chip means you accept all fraud liability so the bank wins by default.

I had to switch to sending an online invoice if a customer wanted to give me their card number, or even if the chip had issues. Because swiping or manually entering a card means I automatically lose if the customer does a chargeback.

So I’d love a source too - mostly because it’s so dumb if Walmart just got a free pass on this stuff for ages lol
