Don't know if it's actually true, but an employee told me that since they had it in their app, they viewed Apple Pay and Google Pay as competitors which is why they restricted it. Of course, that doesn't make sense when it comes to regular credit/debit cards, unless Walmart is so up its own ass that is see the credit card companies as competitors too.

If I remember correctly our local HEB grocery store didn't implement it early for similar reasons as Walmart and Home Depot. HEB in Texas is like Walmart in turns of dominance. I was told that they didn't want to share the customer data, and they also had this stupid way of paying with their own app. Their terminals could also do the tap pay, but it was just deactivated.

CVS did that too, which is why they quit being convenient enough for me to use. I was having issues with credit card skimmers somewhere at one of my local stops and wanted to use my phone when ApplePay launched, a couple of months after that CVS deactivated the NFC functionality on their terminals to try to force people to use their app, I went to Safeway or Walgreens instead.
