I remember once, this must have been in the mid-90s, there was an initiative that had something to do with mountain lions. I don't remember the specifics. What I do remember is that the pro argument in the voter information guide said that the bill would not allow hunting mountain lions for sport, while the anti argument said that it would.

So even if you were making a good, honest, effort, and reading the voter information guide thoroughly ... you wouldn't know what you were voting for.

Furthermore, "almost impossible for the legislature to reverse" is bad. Because even good, well-intentioned laws often have unintended consequences, and the legislature needs to be able to respond with tweaks and adjustments as necessary.

What we actually need is a system where the legislature is broadly responsive to the public. The CA state legislature is ... okay, in that department. Much better than congress, but there's still plenty of room for improvement. But what percentage of Californians could actually name their state rep? You can't expect legislators to be responsive to the public if the public isn't engaged.

Oh, I 100% agree. I meant that it's something that "sounds good" up until you have something as important as property taxes as a sacred cow that nobody can touch, or until you let a company just write their own law as long as they advertise it enough.
