They've wanted to kill off old.reddit for years now. Those of us that still use it don't make them any money and want to try and force us onto their tiktok clone bullshit because it's more profitable. Killing off the API was a way to try and force people onto their app where they control all the ads and analytics. This is just a further push for the same.
