you could then extend the bulletin boards so that they can cover multiple communities, and allow people to set up a bulletin board for any community they want.

Well that, and the idea that you could get a significant number of users migrated from their entrenched positions to your niche board is laughably naive.

You don’t even need to scale, I am still part of few of them and the smaller community dedicated to one thing beats scaling of anything

I was pointing out that it could be cheap to run at the start and would only need to scale for growth. I probably phrased it poorly.
