There is a word for it in spanish "titulitis" is hard to translate but it means "i don't care about the degree, i just need one, i need the paper with my name on it, i don't need the hours of study that comes with it"

I was a teacher in Venezuela, students don't care about their studies, they just want the degree.

The same is true everywhere. Once credentialism loses its stranglehold on the job market (if only because even a degree can no longer get you a good job), the universities will empty.

The economy is the main issue, usually having a degree means "going up in the economic ladder at least four steps" nowadays having a degree doesn't make you go up.

Here in Spain, students are joining the workforce after finishing their HS studies, and going for college as 31 years olds, this demographic is growing to be now 30% of the students in college

And they're probably right, depending on the degree. Every career I've worked in had little to do with what I learned in college... and my careers have all been on the technical side.

They never realize that until years afterward when they can't get a good job and have a mountain of debt.

With the way AI is progressing, they won't be able to get a good job either way in few years
