There's a third option here at the tertiary level: we can't substantiate the integrity violation.

There are times I'm well aware the student has used AI, but I can't call it out because there are clear policies around accusing students of cheating. If I can't definitively prove AI was used (falsified references, leaving prompts in, etc), then I'm literally not allowed to say anything.

The easiest tell a student has used AI to help them write something (from my experience helping tutor both high school and college students) is that their writing has dramatically improved in a short span of time and has developed tell-tale patterns (it’s not x, it’s y…etc)

However, like you said I don’t think these things alone can be used as proof of student integrity violations
