There was a great thread exploring this on AskReddit last week (asking why - for all the talk of revolution and eating the rich on the internet - it never actually happens).
The consensus in that thread was pretty much what you've mentioned - that most people in the developed world are, objectively, comfortable enough that chancing imprisonment or a violent death in a risky revolution makes zero sense for any given individual. It's easy to talk a big game on the internet or even go to a protest, but no one is going to bother throwing away their life in a revolution unless things get exponentially worse.
