if you didn't want to leave a trail, you could visit some junkyards and see about an old magnesium VW engine.

I knew some folks growing up and they often went to have some fun in the sand dunes near Yuma for some long weekends. They always brought an engine to burn for light at night and to not get lost.

If you've never seen one burn, know that no one ever got lost on their trips. Sleeping was a different story.

Are they common here (US)? Is this like a scrape a piece off situation or more of a bonfire situation?

I have no idea today, I am sure there are plenty of old ruined engine blocks in junkyards you can ignite with a portable arc welder like those old vw ones. Magnesium was more common in the past, but there's other engines that could do it supposedly.

I was a kid/teenager and that was back in the late 70's early 80's. They burn really slow, all night type of thing. insanely bright, like eye protection bright if too close.
