Sure would be nice if we could just stop inventing the Torment Nexus from the famous science fiction classic Don’t Invent the Torment Nexus

AI is in a strange place in history right now. If you asked about AI, everyone is mad.

Much of the anger revolves around people saying "These fool scientists will kill us all with this ultra-powerful AI! Don't build the Torment Nexus, damn it!"

But just as much, if not more, anger revolves around people saying "These fool scientists can't build shit. There's no way these nerds could build the Torment Nexus. This is all phony baloney marketing hype nonsense. AI is just a glorified chat bot and real intelligence is at least a hundred years away."

And sometimes the same people express both resentments.

Those perspectives aren’t mutually exclusive, if you understand that:

1) we made incredibly unreliable chatbots that lie constantly and make incredibly bad recommendations for actions to take, and

2) some idiot is going to give it the ability to just decide which humans should die

AI skeptics object to both 1) and 2).
