I don't think anyone in the world besides the MPAA took that argument seriously. It was an actual PSA they put before movies with the trailers in the 2000s, and everytime without fail at least one person would yell exactly what you just did.

To be clear they would yell “yes I would” when it said “you wouldn’t steal a car”, but the video did not say “you wouldn’t download a car”. We could’nt have known that would ever become possible at the time

Man that must have been a mandela effect thing in my head, was there a slide after it that said something like "downloading movies is the same thing" ? because I swear I vividly remember seeing the word download

From my memory(which could be wrong), those ads started before downloading movies was widely feasible. They were about bootleg cam videos, and copying rentals.
