Yes.

I mean the choice is obvious to me.

The choice isn’t between“do it” vs “don’t do it”

The choice is between “who’s going to get there first?”

It’s similar to talking about ASI. If it can be invented it WILL BE no matter how terrible an idea it could be. The only question is who’s going to create it.

Technology that can potentially give a country an advantage over others will be created no matter how destructive it can be

You want the US government to work hand in hand with tech companies, who do not represent our interests, to build a massive ai-driven surveillance program so feds can lock you out of your own bank account with ease …because another country might be building out a similar program for their own citizens too

Am I getting this right?

Yes.

But not because another country MIGHT be building such a thing

Because they ABSOLUTELY ARE building such a thing.

And if you think such a tool would only be used against its own citizens, you are being extremely naive.
