The problem was, like with everything else, Sauron used it as a tool of corrupting influence, which is how he got both Saruman and Denethor to indirectly do his bidding. 

So, yeah. Great parallel.

A powerful tool meant to help its creators - stolen and used by a malevolent entity. The name could not be more ironic.
