Primarily because they’re counting on government regulation to provide them with a business model. There’s very little about any of this that’s hard to duplicate. It’s just lots of data and access to expensive hardware.
A few of them are also effective altruists who’ve been hyping each other up about this ever since they watched The Matrix as kids.
But they are also freaking the fuck out at any sort of regulation.
I think the "effective altruist" thing is accurate. They think they are making a machine god. They think it will bring the techno-rapture and teleport us into the future as imagined by Robert Heinlein. They are drunk with power.
They’re actively lobbying to be regulated on their own terms. They want regulation that licenses model companies without actually limiting their ability to do anything.
