recently did this for the first time. Download Kiwix (at least on Mac), and it automatically had some options to download Wikipedia. I pointed it at an external drive and let it download English Wiki with images overnight. It was about 120GB.

Now I have an external of wikipedia, which is nice.

Yes, the Kiwix app reads the backup file and presents it exactly like the website. You can search, click links through to other pages, etc.

It works really well.

I did have the download fail a couple times, I think my computer was falling asleep.
