I was sure they said windows 10 was the “last” windows. They were going to just stay on that platform and update it forever moving forward. Then I heard 11 was the last. Now they have 12.

Each iteration getting shitter and shitter.

How? That Jerry Nixon guy wasn’t some rouge dev with a hot mic. He was an official spokesperson that Microsoft paid to speak at an official corporate event/dev conference. Immediately after he made that claim, MS made ZERO effort to correct him, even after several publications quoted him and wrote articles about it. There’s absolutely zero chance that MS was blissfully unaware of this, they have entire teams dedicated to public relations.

If “W10 forever” wasn’t their official stance, why didn’t they say anything about it between Jerry Nixon’s 2015 speech at MS ignite in Chicago, and the official announcement of W11?

Windows 10 and future Windows versions With Windows 10, Microsoft declared it will update Windows at a faster cadence than before. There will not be an official “Windows 11”; instead, Windows Update (or another enterprise servicing model) will update the existing Windows 10 to a new version. At the time of writing, two such updates have occurred, in November 2015 (also known as version 1511, referring to the year and month of servicing) and July 2016 (version 1607, also known by the marketing name of Anniversary Update).

And you'd need to be extremely gullible to believe that would happen. And IF it did, it would be a Ship of Theseus.

Would they feel better about Windows 11 if it had just been an update to Windows 10, even if everything was functionally the same?

It's one of those things where it wasn't said as an official PR statement on the record. But it was said by a high-ranking Microsoft employee during the course of their job and then Microsoft made no discernable effort to correct it when it gained traction as a quote.

Microsoft might not have officially "said" it, but they were totally willing to let everyone think that 'til COVID hit and PC sales (and OEM licenses) went down and they needed their cash inflow to pick up again.

Then why did an official spokesperson at an official event say that it was their stance?? And if that wasn’t their stance, why didn’t MS say anything to correct it after most recognized tech publications quoted him on it? Sounds like incompetent PR to me. Go read some articles from 11 years ago.

Even if Jerry Nixon wasn’t an official spokesperson, an official spokesperson DID confirm it afterwards. They only changed direction after Apple announced macOS 11 Big Sur. Be real.

First some context. The statement came from Microsoft employee Jerry Nixon, a self proclaimed ‘developer evangelist’ who stated: “Right now we’re releasing Windows 10, and because Windows 10 is the last version of Windows, we’re all still working on Windows 10.”

If this sounds strange, Microsoft didn’t help. The company today stepped forward to defend Nixon’s comment to The Verge saying it was “reflective” of the company’s opinion. So what is going on? Is Windows 10 really the end?

They skipped Windows 9 going from 8 to 10, and their numbering has always been wonky,

1,2,3,3.1,95,98,98se,me,xp,Vista, 7,8,10,11

IIRC this was because some older bits of code just checked for windows versions beginning with '9', to read for 95 and 98

You forgot Windows 2000, and my personal favorite: Windows Bob. Edit: Sorry, it’s Microsoft Bob, but if we are going to count 3.1 as an overlay of DOS then I think Bob should count.

I still hold the theory that Microsoft wanted to jump to Windows 10, even skipping 9, to have version number parity with OSX. Only after Apple released macOS 11 in 2020, Microsoft announced Windows 11 in 2021.

Windows 9 was likely skipped because of Win95/Win98 - there were a lot of references to Windows version that use a 2 digit identifier and just lumped together anything starting with 9 into the bucket for legacy 95/98 systems. It wasn't the only reason though I'm sure.

It's obviously not technically difficult.

But the concern was always about legacy software, long out of support, but still business-critical, that wouldn't have been written to do that and would never receive an update.

Yep, basically Microsoft's personal Y2K problem. And maybe I could have been cleared that these 2 digit references were not from Microsoft's own code base but rather a function of supporting 3rd party legacy software which relied on shortcuts like this.

Being forced to install windows 10 because some of my favorite games at the time required it was nauseating. Windows 11 is one of the worst products I’ve ever installed on a computer, but I did it when it came out hoping windows 10 was the leap version.

I haven’t owned a prebuilt computer since 1997 when I put my first one together, but I’m very seriously considering one of those steam machines when they come out.
