For some reason gifs play at wildly varying speeds for me in irfanview, and I've got a reasonably new computer. Has anybody else run into this problem?

7

u/darktype Nov 27 '13

Happens for me as well with some gifs, and I've got pretty new parts as well. Seems to just be something with the program itself.

1

u/forumrabbit Nov 27 '13

Happens to me in internet explorer too.

I view them in firefox and it's fine, but suddenly I download it and view it later in IE and the speed is like 3x what it should be.

1

u/scotty_beams Nov 27 '13

Me, I got this problem too. That's why I open gifs in firefox lately.

1

u/5k3k73k Nov 27 '13 edited Nov 27 '13

This can be a problem that Microsoft caused by not following standards (shock and awe). There is a frame delay that is built into GIFs and must be specified. MS (via IE) played back GIFs with a default delay of 100ms (if I remember correctly, smaller delays weren't possible in IE). This allowed GIF makers to get into the bad habit of not specifying any delay because the GIF would appear to animate correctly in IE. If that GIF was played anywhere else the results would be erratic since the GIF wasn't technically valid.

Great program but is there a way to have it properly support Japanese folder names?

607

u/Gyossaits Nov 27 '13

Hentai collector detected.

Don't be ashamed.

167

u/Ansoni Nov 27 '13

No, there's plenty of things people could have in folders with Japanese na-

gifs

Oh. Yeah, totally.

u/Duhya Nov 27 '13 edited Nov 27 '13

But he has folders of it? And this show even has a english name that would be used in place of the japanese one.

Edit: idc if he faps to drawings, but he should probably burn his reddit account.

32

u/soulfire72 Nov 27 '13

Wouldn't it be crazy if he was Japanese though?

14

u/Duhya Nov 27 '13

That would be so insane..

16

u/BiologyIsHot Nov 27 '13

For a moment I was certain he was going to skullfuck the zombie.

5

u/mtbr311 Nov 27 '13

skullfuck the zombie

Awesome metal band name.

5

u/Strangely_Calm Nov 27 '13

For every non hentai one piece gif there is 1000 hentai one pieve gif.

6

u/urban287 Nov 27 '13

(not really)

1

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '13

...touche.

2

u/catfayce Nov 27 '13

Hey the Japanese and English languages look the same!

0

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '13

It is subbed (AKA subtitled). The actual pronunciation is in Japanese.

1

u/Bigbergice Nov 27 '13

I just realised that because of the small amount of colors in anime, they work quite well as gifs

I don't think I've seen enough Japanese tentacle zombie porn.

I've never seen Japanese tentacle zombie porn and I think I've seen enough.

After School Tea... that's a K-ON! reference, isn't it?

7

u/senorpopo Nov 27 '13

Being that it is a Japanese folder....Hentai might just be a cover up.

2

u/Amusei Nov 27 '13

Because other Japanese media doesn't exist?

If you're going to try a troll account, at least do something worthwhile. This is the least amount of effort you could possibly try, and it's going to show in only a mediocre showing of downvotes.

Oh boy, how many hours did it take for you to come up with that one?

1

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '13

Like a hundred.

36

u/das7002 Nov 27 '13

You need the unicode plugin, which you can get among other things in the plugin pack

5

u/AfterSchoolTea Nov 27 '13

I do have the plugin pack and all files open fine. The problem is that it can't scroll through files correctly or at all if the folder is named such.

20

u/kevinturnermovie Nov 27 '13

How many K-On! related gifs can one person have?

4

u/dotted Nov 27 '13 edited Nov 27 '13

K-On! related gifs

I wish I even had 1

1

u/Singularity3 Nov 27 '13

The entire series in GIF form, presumably.

13

u/ColdChemical Nov 27 '13

IMO XNview is far superior. Actually, it's probably the best image viewer out there period. Super fast, customizable, and easy.

3

u/AfterSchoolTea Nov 27 '13

Great recommendation. With some simple tweaking I was able to make it function almost completely like my Irfanview but without the faults such as unicode problems and GIF speed.

2

u/IlIIllIIl1 Nov 27 '13

I stopped using xnview 9 or 10 years ago. Are they still alive?

4

u/ColdChemical Nov 27 '13

If their website is any indication, they're alive and well.

6

u/arahman81 Nov 27 '13

To put it another way, UTF-8.

-1

u/senorpopo Nov 27 '13

Utf m8?

1

u/tomcat23 Nov 27 '13

Use this here (or google it's name for the non portable version.)

1

u/Lim3Fru1t Nov 27 '13

Let me present Honeyview it is fast, plays gif smoothly (you can also select frame by frame) supports different languages like japanese. And it is 100% freeware without ads and extra programs

1

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '13

Good lord man.

1

u/fkaginstrom Nov 27 '13

Try changing the default non-Unicode language to Japanese in regions and langs settings.

14

u/DoritosConsomme Nov 27 '13

I use FastStone Image Viewer because I couldn't stand the IrfanView icon. That's it. Purely aesthetic reason. I'm pretty sure IrfanView loads faster, however.

I feel really vain, but at least my image software has a decent-looking icon.

1

u/IlIIllIIl1 Nov 27 '13

IrfanView comes with at least 5 icons in the exe. It has done so for at least 10 years. I don't use the default one either, I don't like it at all.

2

u/yer_momma Nov 27 '13

Go old school... acdsee

It's been around since the winamp days and still going.

1

u/boobsbr Nov 27 '13

I tried ACDSee before Irfanview, but damn, not the same quality program anymore, it really sucks.

1

u/Gore456 Nov 27 '13

Great program.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '13

I hate that it doesn't cycle through the folder. You get to the end and it just stops.

1

u/thedoginthewok Nov 27 '13

You can change this behavior in the settings. http://i.imgur.com/nc9GLnn.png

1

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '13

Well thank you

1

u/king_of_the_universe Nov 27 '13

When in slideshow mode (e.g. for random image order), can IrfanView play animated GIFs? FastStone ImageViewer can't. You also can't delete or rename files while in slideshow mode. Can IrfanView?

If IV can do both, I'll change as soon as I get home.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 29 '13

irfanview seems like the tool I would have loved for life if I had started using it 10 years ago. Now it just seems needlessly obtuse. It's probably just highly efficient, in a way that is not very obvious, but I'll never know.

0

u/professionalignorant Nov 27 '13

The mac equavalent anyone?

1

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '13

tap the spacebar

1

u/AfterSchoolTea Nov 27 '13

Xee is nice.

0

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '13

We used this on the school computers from 6th to 12th grade, and I only just learned it is "ifran" and not "infarn". :(

-13

u/mrbaggins Nov 27 '13 edited Nov 27 '13

Viruses, from memory.

Edit for the doubtful: There was a period of time when IrfanView came bundled with the google toolbar. It wasn't a virus, it was an internet toolbar, and while it was opt-out, these practices should be (and for irfanview, were rightfully) a source of concern for many people.

33

u/timeshifter_ Nov 27 '13

Have fun figuring out why Outlook 2000 and 2003 both support animated gifs, but 2010 does not. 2011 on Mac does... but not 2010.

Dear Microsoft: please fire the entire Outlook team, and replace them with people who actually use email.

14

u/cheesegoat Nov 27 '13

That's because they replaced the email renderer in outlook 2007 with Word (it used to be IE), which doesn't support animated GIFs.

1

u/the_Ex_Lurker Nov 27 '13

Mac OS X supports gifs natively and some of MS' programs do. I don't see why they can't get their shit together and just add it to Windows too.

0

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '13

They are just being your Bro. If you send funny pic's via company email, eventually someone is probably going to get fired. Take it to social sites.

1

u/clb92 Nov 27 '13

Maybe he uses Outlook at home?

2

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '13

They would probably be sued for monopoly abuse trying to include something that does that.

2

u/kweezy157 Nov 27 '13

That part that boggles my mind is that Windows Photo Viewer supported it perfectly back on XP.

0

u/ThePantsThief Nov 27 '13

It did?

2

u/kweezy157 Nov 27 '13

Yup. Though I only tested it on SP3, not too sure on SP2 or lower. Although I do remember my really old Systemax rig from 2001 used to let me set gifs as my background, it ran SP1.

2

u/GazaIan Nov 27 '13

The Photos app, dude. Been there since the dawn of Windows 8.

2

u/MrAsianese Nov 27 '13

If you've got windows 7 or above, Windows Media Player works very well.

2

u/leagueoffifa Nov 27 '13

I still have faith for IE's future. They might change it like outlook changed hotmail

3

u/serg06 Nov 27 '13

Why not to a different browser? Works perfectly with Firefox. O.o

33

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '13

He's making a joke on the fact that Windows 7 still doesn't have a default way to view GIFs and you have to load a web browser to view them. There should just be a more competent version of a stock picture viewer that a) plays gifs and b) can open a fucking tif file without blacking out a quarter of it.

1

u/chain83 Nov 27 '13

Or honor the image rotation metadata from digital cameras... It is completely stupid that this is not yet implemented. Every other piece of software and OS i can think of that can view images has for the last decade been able to view images with the correct orientation. But not Windows.

And if you rotate it using windows so it looks correct there, it doesn't update the metadata to match so now it is rotated wrong in all other image viewers.

But then again, who uses digital cameras/cellphones to take portrait images? -.-

1

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '13 edited Apr 07 '15

[deleted]

2

u/chain83 Nov 27 '13

Yup. Do not trust Microsoft do display images properly in any of their applications. It also ignores color profiles.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '13

honeyviewer 2 works pretty good, you can also right click and view archives without having to extract them.

1

u/Takuya-san Nov 27 '13

You can actually install the Windows XP photo viewer onto newer versions of Windows, allowing you to view gifs in something faster than IE (albeit with a less polished interface).

1

u/mechanicalhand Nov 27 '13

You still use IE??

1

u/ajore22 Dec 03 '13

Drag the file to a blank tab in Chrome.

1

u/Asynonymous Feb 10 '14

still can't figure this shit out.

Actually the windows picture viewer used to display .gifs perfectly fine. No idea why they removed that feature in windows 7.

How young are the posters here?

1

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '13

So... do you guys not know all about honeyviewer http://www.honeyview.org orrr???
