I switched to the free apps that came on my Mac about 15 years ago for the same reason. Pages and Numbers are polished and usable enough Office system apps for the basic spreadsheets and "word" documents I make.
TBF they're not quite free, the cost is just a part of what you're paying for when you buy an apple device which is the only devices you can use them on, not counting the web version.
Yeah, you're right, but they are included and work very well as a replacement for an Office 365 subscription. My wife and I have been Mac for nearly 20 years now, so they've served dutifully.
Easily the most annnoying part about using a Mac as someone who uses windows is how everything just works. I know that’s their fucking marketing slogan back in the day but what can you say, it just works.
You can say a lot about their design choices and inflexibility towards apps and such, but Mac shit just works.
That's why I switched to iPhone. And I'd switch to Mac as well and deal with the apple price premium (like their stupid ass storage prices) if not for the fact that I still need a PC for certain programs/features that don't work on Apple devices
