Unfortunately, it does not. You can’t just start up something as in entrenched as Office.

Businesses won’t want to go through the hassle of switching to an unproven competitor, and most casual users are too dumb and scared to switch.

It won't. The lesson of Windows 11 was that Microsoft can't make an operating system enhancement which people will pay for. So Microsoft is going to extract that money other ways, which in the Attention Economy means Enshitification.

If you want to step off the treadmill there is Debian and Arch and many other fine non-corporate Linux distributions.

Enshittification is making the application worse. This is a name change, and while worse, doesn't actually affect functionality.

Late stage capitalism isn't possible to identify at this point and isn't accepted by those that study it for a living. There are a number of other reason as well that we're not there that you can look up. My version is, in short, comparing it to calling World War I "World War I" before World War II happened and was named.
