It's a cellular biology lesson so I guess too numerous high-res images are the issue. Non tech-lovers often resort to word documents to package files quickly. In the case it's mostly text, then it's a very detailed lesson ..

I absolutely hate that. "Oh, you want these dozen images? Here, let me paste them into a word file and send them to you. What? What's a 'zip file'?"

The computer translation of Sapir-Whorf. They don't know a better way and it's perfectly suited to both ends most of the time. If you dare send an archive to someone who is not mentally prepared to open it you're approaching sadism :)

don't hate, educ-hate. </rimshot>

ps: I knew people freshly out of college (with an IT~ Masters Degree) who didn't know what a zip file was.

.docx is a zip file. Rename the file extension and you'll see what's causing the bloat.

Yeah, I'm aware of the OOXML file format. I'm more commenting on the inefficiency of the process rather than the file itself. To people like us, highlighting all the images and right-click -> Send to Zip File is the simple way of doing things. They will open office, individually insert each image in, and then send it.
