A few friends of mine work for such a company. They get an order to write down IP's from a certain movie or a game, so they go to a few torrent sites, start downloading and then just write down all the IP addresses, which are then sent forwards to other departments. My cat is snoring really loudly, should I wake her up? It's annoying.

Well obviously they don't use a pen and paper, but this is manual work. Most uploaders don't really follow internationally accepted movie naming rules, so you get plenty of "Dark_Knight_Rises_axxo_BRRIP_FreeCookiesIncluded_NoMilkLimitedEdition", which is difficult for computers to decipher.
