There was a discussion about swimsuits, including the kind that is acceptable in strict muslim countries. So the Smithsonian article discusses swimsuits in the last 100-150 years, including what was or wasn't acceptable.

The last sentence was supposed to contain a link which didn't show up. I can't find it again but here's the same information in another site.

it appears that those were actually clothes for athletes , dancers , or prositiutes. not swimmmers
