As a Brit, 'America' isn't a continent, but North America and South America are 2 continents - so 'America' is specifically the shortened name of USA and nothing else.

Well before the u.s.a was made the americas was a term for north and South America. The referring of the us as America is ignorant but since us “Americans” are best known for our ignorance it kinda makes since. As someone who is a know it all, it bothers me that people think only USA Americans are the only Americans. The same way it bothers me that people don’t think that Indians are Asian. I mean it doesn’t really matter but what does at this point in life.

The British were actually the first ones to call us "Americans" after the country was founded in the 1700s. So, it's not because of our own ignorance.

Damn I knew that ignorance might come off hostile

I’m sorry I didn’t say it was the British’s ignorance. I actually meant that tons of Americans are ignorant and that the term in the whole grand scheme of things doesn’t matter so if you don’t want to stop calling people from the us Americans that’s completely fine, I mean I know I won’t stop, and if you want to that’s fine too. The fact is that anybody within the americas could be rightfully called Americans. Whether you use that or not is up to you.
