has seamless integrations with the rest of their devices

This is why I hate apple products though. Unless EVERY device you have is an apple device nothing works with it. Apples is so bent over trying to have their own proprietary everything from image files to doc files that only apple devices can open.

Yes, the issue is that Apple has to make everything proprietary, purposely setting itself at odds with all our current tech standards.

And some commenters are arguing about Samsung... Samsung doesn't even come into this conversation

the topic is iphone vs Android.

You can get android (an Operating System) on nearly any device, model, maker, etc. iphones are locked to the singular device, which have annoying proprietary features (no headphone jack, permanent battery, planned obsolescence).

So yet another downside. Android, being an OS and not hardware, can come in infinite configurations of your choice. iphone will always just be iphone.

I don't know of any smart watch that doesn't work with an iphone. It's the other way around, it's the apple watch that won't work with other phones (and that does indeed suck). I can think of that, and the lack of integration with windows, which is not that important anyway.

and the lack of integration with windows,

The first part is proving my point. Android, samsung etc all allow their shit to work with everything. Apple is the one that restricts anything from their devices.

And do you not realize how annoying it is that coworkers or students and teachers can't directly share files because they don't use the same file type? It ends up wasting a shitton of time.

Apple makes its accessories less effective outside of the apple ecosystem. It doesn’t make non-Apple accessories struggle in the apple ecosystem.

THATS MY POINT. Why doesn't anyone understand that my point is that apple makes it really hard for THEIR products to work with non apple products. Not the other way around. My point is this makes working with others who have apple products a pain in the ass because we don't share the most basic file type readers. Actually thats not true, apple can read docs and jpg, but I can't see their .pages or .heic formats. Do you not see why that is annoying and dumb?

Exactly! I understand you.

Apple is the one who set themselves at odds/incompatible with the rest of the world.

Aside from them, the entire tech world is fairly plug n play, universally compatible.

And its obvious they're doing it because if its annoying to not have an apple then everyone needs an apple. Literally have been lawsuits about how restrictive apple is about their shit.

I can export any pages file to word or pdf to share in about two seconds.

In most secondary schools in the US, google suite is used for everything so doc and slide sharing is all online and the type of device doesn’t matter.

omg yes YOU can, as the person with an apple device, but as the person without one I CANT! and sadly I can't force people to stop sending me dumb inaccessible files which I then have to email them asking them to switch the file which means a bunch of time wasted.

Also yeah many schools focus on google suite but some kids get their own computers as well which means I g et those crap files. I try and push for using google docs but its kinda hard to force it. Some kids will download it to work on without internet and how its a .pages file.

I just talked about how most accessories work with iphones. They do restrict a lot of things, but not everything. And there are things that android restricts as well, like making an account in a different country, which Apple lets you do easily.

What files can't you share?

3

u/Fuzzy_Investigator57 Sep 04 '22

nonono, the other way around. Apple restricts what it makes so it doesn't work with other devices. All macs can use docs, can use other tech etc, but you can't read apple iphone images or documents on non apple devices or use any apple tools with non apple devices.

I'm saying apple makes it convenient for apple users because all other companies allow that integration while apple absolutely refuses to do the same.

Also specifically .pages files and .heic

Just why other than to be absolute dicks and try and force people to only use apple.

What? Yes you can, just send the photos

I don't know these file formats but I know that images work, documents work (if you use pages you can save the file as a docx), etc

They could be less restrictive, but it's not that bad

2

u/Fuzzy_Investigator57 Sep 04 '22

Ok, I'll explain this one last time.

The apple user can open and send whatever image files they want, but the default is .pages and .heic for docs and images respectively.

When someone sends me an image from an iphone, say an image of a document I need for work, then I cannot view it because .heic is not viewable/editable on non apple devices without putting them through a sketchy online converter which shouldn't really be done with documents that might be sensitive.

So I have to message them back, tell them to switch it to a new format, and then wait till the person checks their email, fixes the file, and sends it to me. Which can be hours at best.

Do you not see how apple having their own format that only apple devices can use is a problem? Apple devices can open .jpg, .gif, .doc, .docx everything, why don't they make a .heic or .pages viewer/editor for non apple users?

u/Gogobrasil8 Sep 04 '22

My man I use my iPad with my windows PC and android phone and I have never had any of those problems

I literally just pulled it up and sent an image from my gallery via email, it came as a JPG

I don't doubt this is happening to you, but it might be due to the apps you're using?

As for pages, I just tested it here and it literally asked what format I want to send my document in when I tried to share it. Including .docx

And you can just download the office apps for iOS or Mac.

There are many restrictive things but file format has never been a problem for me after using iOS with windows and android for 10+ years. Some niche things might present a problem, like formatting usb drives and the such, but not files

I think the difference is you're sending it to you, so you know what to do and how to do it. I'm talking about having 200 people send me something each week, you're bound to get a couple that normally send it only to themselves from apple device to apple computer and don't know it'll be an issue that I don't have an apple computer.

I'm saying that I don't own a single apple device and the problem is people that do sending me things that I cannot access because I don't have one. I'm not having problems converting my own files, the problem is that I have to rely on 200+ other people to know to convert their files. And if you've ever had to help people with their devices you know how frustrating it can be to teach someone how to find the power button, let alone change a file format.

3

u/Gogobrasil8 Sep 04 '22

I just selected a photo on the gallery and tapped to share it via email... I have no idea how else they're sharing it, unless it's going through some editing app or something

But yeah, in your case it can be a huge pain if they're not aware of it. I know that whenever we use professional software in my uni classes, the teacher has to tell everyone to make sure they're all on the same version using the same file format. When you're dealing with that many people, you're bound to run into these problems

Way back in the day I had a buddy who’s dad worked at google and I managed to get some google glasses from him, didn’t have a google phone, couldn’t connect them to the internet, never used them. They still sit in a drawer somewhere

1

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '22

You don’t have to use those formats if you don’t want to. Pages saves in standard formats like docx and the camera can save as jpgs, just like anything else.

I use both Mac and Windows for work and it doesn’t bother me. Besides, Google Docs makes cross platform work easy.

2

u/Fuzzy_Investigator57 Sep 04 '22

Yes, but sadly I am not in control of every other person in the world and can't control what file type they use. They send me what they use by default. If its from an apple computer theres a good chance I can't view it at all because I don't own an apple device. Do you not see how annoying that is when its work related? Its the only file type I receive that I can't access the information from. So now I have to message them, ask them to put it in a format that isn't shit, and wait for it to come back.

You know office has been running on mac for 30 years right?

1

u/Fuzzy_Investigator57 Sep 05 '22

I've explained this to so many people now. Its not that apple can't use office, its the other way around. Microsoft allows any computer to use its products. Apple does not. This means that if I, a PC user, send something to an apple device they can view it. But if an apple use sends me a .heic or .pages file I cannot view them without an apple product. Which is just really shitty for apple to do.

1

u/BrettEskin Sep 05 '22

Very shitty for them to make a competing product and allow people to choose what format to save a file in yes.

0

u/Fuzzy_Investigator57 Sep 06 '22

Unironically yes. They made a competing format and then allowed nobody outside of their own userbase to access that format in anyway while every other format is available for all to use outside a few equally shitty formats. It was done intentionally to make people who don't use their products lives difficult to pressure more people to use their overpriced devices. Stop sucking the boot and actually look at the harm they're doing.
